Sustainability

Our Commitment to Sustainability

At National Quarries Company Limited (NQCL), we recognize the crucial role that the aggregate mining industry plays in national development while also acknowledging our responsibility to minimize environmental impacts and contribute to the long-term sustainability of our natural resources. Our sustainability initiatives are rooted in global best practices, national environmental policies, and international frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).We are committed to responsible quarrying through land rehabilitation, biodiversity conservation, waste reduction, community engagement, and sustainable economic development.

Rehabilitation and Land Restoration

NQCL has taken significant steps toward environmentally responsible quarry rehabilitation, ensuring that mined lands are restored for future generations. Through partnerships with the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), IAMovement, Close the Loop and the GEF-IWEco Project, we have successfully implemented innovative land restoration techniques, including:

The Vetiver System (VS)

A natural, bioengineering method using vetiver grass to stabilize soil, control erosion, and rebuild degraded land.

Organic Mulching and Soil Regeneration

The application of organic waste, such as grass cuttings, wood chips, and compost, to restore soil health.

Agroforestry and Reforestation

Planting over 600 trees of 25 different species, including fruit and hardwood trees, to enhance biodiversity and support long-term ecological balance.

Circular Economy Initiatives

Diverting 315 cubic meters of organic waste from landfills for use in soil rehabilitation.

Community Engagement and Empowerment

Sustainability is not just about environmental stewardship—it’s also about empowering people. NQCL has been instrumental in training and certifying local community members in sustainable land management through initiatives such as the Quarry Rehabilitation Champions program.

Employment and Skills Training

Over 30 individuals have been trained in quarry rehabilitation techniques, equipping them with skills in vetiver planting, soil conservation, and handicraft production.

Livelihood Development

Community members now have opportunities to sell vetiver handicrafts, organic compost, and plants, fostering independent economic growth beyond the quarry rehabilitation projects.

Education and Outreach

Through partnerships with universities, NGOs, and corporate stakeholders, we promote public awareness of sustainable quarrying practices.

Environmental Responsibility and Compliance

NQCL adheres to Trinidad and Tobago’s environmental regulations and international best practices to minimize the impact of quarrying activities. Our sustainability framework includes:

Compliance with the Minerals Act (2000)

Ensuring that all quarrying operations include proper land rehabilitation measures.

Water and Soil Conservation

Regular monitoring of soil health, erosion control, and water quality to ensure environmental balance.

Biodiversity Protection
